When I was studying at National Taiwan University, I felt uncertain about my future and unsure where my path might lead. Perhaps you feel the same—unclear about your career direction, or clear about your interests but unsure how to take that first step. The International Mentorship Program was created to help students take that step with confidence.
I studied Zoology, drawn by a genuine interest in animals, but still exploring where my strengths lay. I spent time in a molecular biology laboratory trying to grow animal cells—and instead grew bacteria, which was very much not the goal! I learned to classify fish and draw specimens, yet none of these experiences truly inspired me. Everything changed when my professor encouraged me to conduct a field study on the breeding ecology of skylarks in Kenting. When I saw three newly hatched chicks lift their heads and call out for the first time, the moment stayed with me. I knew then that I had found the direction I had been searching for.
Looking back, what mattered most was not getting everything right, but being given the chance to try—to step into a real environment, test my assumptions, and learn through experience. That belief sits at the heart of the International Mentorship Program.
For many international students, taking a first step in another country can be especially difficult. New academic cultures, unfamiliar professional expectations, and limited networks can make it hard to turn interests into action. Recognising this, we created the International Mentorship Program—the first mentorship-style internship program of its kind in Taiwan—so that international students could explore possible futures with guidance, support, and encouragement.
I encourage you to explore the opportunities available through this program and to spend time reading the stories of our alumni. Their journeys show the many ways a first step can unfold—often in unexpected and rewarding directions.
This program is made possible through the trust and collaboration of our partner organisations and Global Talent Alliance partners. On behalf of the University, we sincerely thank them for their continued engagement and shared belief in nurturing global talent through mentorship and real-world experience.
Taiwan is an open and welcoming place, and we are proud to be your academic home. Through this program, we hope you will gain not only professional experience, but also a lasting sense of connection and belonging—and that many of you will choose to continue your journeys here.
